چکیده

We have imaged the central ∼ 1 kpc of the circumnuclear starburst disk in the galaxy NGC253 in the HCN(1→0), HCO(1→0), and CO(1→0) transitions at 60 pc resolution using the Owens Valley Radio ObservatoryMillimeter-Wavelength Array (OVRO). We have also obtained Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) observations of the HCN(4→3) and the HCO(4→3) lines of the starburst disk. We find that the emission from the HCN(1→0) and HCO(1→0) transitions, both indicators of dense molecular gas, trace regions which are non–distinguishable within the uncertainties of our observations. Even though the continuum flux varies by more than a factor 10 across the starburst disk, the HCN/HCO ratio is constant throughout the disk, and we derive an average ratio of 1.1±0.2. From an excitation analysis we find that all lines from both molecules are subthermally excited and that they are optically thick. This subthermal excitation implies that the observed HCN/HCO line ratio is sensitive to the underlying chemistry. The constant line ratio thus implies that there are no strong abundance gradients across the starburst disk of NGC253. This finding may also explain the variations in L′HCN/L ′ HCO+ between different star forming galaxies both nearby and at high redshifts. HCN versus HCO as dense molecular gas mass tracer in Luminous Infrared Galaxies

It has been recently argued that the HCN J=1–0 line emission may not be an unbiased tracer of dense molecular gas (n & 10 cm) in Luminous Infrared Galaxies (LIRGs: LFIR > 10 11 L⊙) and HCO + J=1–0 may constitute a better tracer instead (Graciá-Carpio et al. 2006), casting doubt into earlier claims supporting the former as a good tracer of such gas (Gao & Solomon 2004; Wu et al. 2006). In this p...

Dense gas in nearby galaxies XVI . The nuclear starburst environment in NGC 4945 ⋆

A multi-line millimeter-wave study of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC4945 has been carried out using the Swedish-ESO Submillimeter Telescope (SEST). The study covers the frequency range from 82GHz to 354GHz and includes 80 transitions of 19 molecules. 1.3 mm continuum data of the nuclear source are also presented. An analysis of CO and 1.3 mm continuum fluxes indicates that the conversion facto...

First Detection of Hco Emission at High Redshift

We report the detection of HCO(J=1→0) emission towards the Cloverleaf quasar (z = 2.56) through observations with the Very Large Array. This is the first detection of ionized molecular gas emission at high redshift (z > 2). HCO emission is a star formation indicator similar to HCN, tracing dense molecular hydrogen gas (n(H2) ≃ 10 5 cm) within star–forming molecular clouds. We derive a lensing–c...

The location of the dense and ionized gas in the NGC 2023 PDR

The VLA and the BIMA array were used to obtain high resolution (10–20 ′′) observations of C + , traced by the C91α recombination line at 8.6 GHz, and the dense molecular gas, traced by HCN and HCO + (1–0), of the photon dominated region (PDR) associated with the reflection nebula NGC 2023. Using the VLA, continuum emission is detected at 8.6 GHz from a faint Hii region associated with HD 37903....

Is HCN a True Tracer of Dense Molecular Gas in LIRGs and ULIRGs?

We present the results of the first HCO survey probing the dense molecular gas content of a sample of 16 luminous and ultraluminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs and ULIRGs). Previous work, based on HCN(1–0) observations, had shown that LIRGs and ULIRGs posses a significantly higher fraction of dense molecular gas compared to normal galaxies. While the picture issued from HCO partly confirms this re...
